Recently I have wished to put my mind back in the past, just a bit, to when I was the most confident about my work and its possible future. The cliche is true, there are no do overs, but I guess we are all sometimes visited by the wish to have done things differently. Imagine my delight when, cleaning my studio, I uncovered a very large, forgotten piece that I had started in 1996. This was a very consequential year for me. I decided to try to finish it. What an unexpected opportunity. It’s your now self meeting your 30 years ago self. I’m treating it as just a jigsaw puzzel or coloring book project. Zero pressure, just comfort food. Lesson: don’t ever trash your old, unfinished pieces. Save them. And if you rediscover them, treat them like the archeological dig that they are. A Venn diagram of past and present.
